Read the "What's at Stake?" feature in this chapter. As the feature makes clear, considerable debate exists over what constitutes a conducive learning environment. Some faculty and students believe that speech codes are needed to ensure a learning environment that is not hostile. Others claim that speech codes hinder student learning.
Take a position: Should your college campus have a speech code?
As you develop your argument, answer the following questions:
- How do you define a "conducive learning environment?"
- Think of an example or two in which a speech code might help create a positive learning environment. Think of an example where it might hinder it.
